Time to Harvest

Take a look at what's happening  in the garden!  We have cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, tomatoes (just turning red now!!), cilantro, basil, sage, oregano, thyme, mint, rosemary and dill. We still have carrots, beets and lettuce that need to be harvested and taken home this week.

Our first sunflower bloomed! And the pumpkins are growing. Lots to see and enjoy!!

Come each week to gather your produce and continue maintaining/weeding the garden. We will also plant for the fall over the next several weeks.

Identifying Weeds

We had a great turn out last week! It was encouraging and fun to share the work of pulling weeds, tilling the soil and playing in the yard. We planted lettuce and onions, too! Thanks everyone! We also had about 6 families attend the kick-off meeting on Sunday. We talked about the "rules" of property such as ensuring the fences remained locked for the safety of our children. And we walked through the garden together, seeing the various beds, pulling weeds and sampling our first harvest of radishes.

This post is focused on weeds because it can be hard to know what's a weed and what's a seedling. We are posting a few photos of the weeds that we deal with in our garden. Use this a reference point when you come to weed.
This weed has a long root. Grab it from the base and pull slowly to get the entire root.

This is the under side of the weed pictured above.

This weed has a shallow root. You can pull or scrape it out. And thanks to Christy's knowledge, we now know that this weed is EDIBLE! It contains a lot of iron. And it tastes like lettuce. :) So get some good vitamins while you weed!

This particular weed is very, very prickly. Use gloves and a spade to remove it. The roots are DEEP.

Seedlings

We've got seedlings!
Peas and radish

Beets

Tomatoes: Yellow Cherry, Yellow Pear, and Green Tomatillos.

We've also got celery, bok choy and several varieties of carrots coming up. More to come... We'll post more pix as we make progress today.

In other news the chicken coop is coming along. And our chickies are getting big! Here's s pic of "Mama B". Named after one of Ryan's co-teachers back in NYC. She was a special lady!
